Established agricultural crops currently used as bioenergy and bioproducts feedstocks include corn used to produce fuel ethanol and bioproducts such as biodegradable plastics and synthetic polymers (e.g., nylon); grain sorghum used to produce ethanol; and soybeans used to produce biodiesel and bioproducts (such as inks, adhesives and binders, and used in plastics and detergents among others).
Other grain crops such as wheat, barley, and oat, and other oilseed crops such as sunflower, safflower, flax, and canola are not currently used in large quantities to produce bioenergy and bioproducts, but from a technology perspective could be.
Sugar crops such as sugarcane and sugarbeets are not currently used to produce biofuels in the U.S., although sugarcane is the principal feedstock used to produce ethanol in Brazil.
