Grain sorghum (Gramineae Sorghum bicolor L. Moench), also called milo, is currently produced in 18 states with production concentrated in Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Grain sorghum is drought tolerant relative to many other traditional crops and is often produced in dryer areas.
In 2006, 288 million pounds of grain sorghum were produced (5.3 million acres; 54.2 bu/ac).
Grain sorghum is produced primarily as cattle feed and is also used in bird seed. About 15% of the crop is currently used to produce ethanol using the same dry grind process used for corn.
