The construction of new buildings, and the renovation, remodeling, and demolition of existing buildings generate substantial quantities of wastes including wood which can be recovered and used to produce bioenergy and bioproducts. Data regarding the quantities of wood contained in construction and demolition (C&D) wastes are limited-- estimated quantities are typically 35 to 40 million dry tons, most of which is landfilled. Due to contamination from paint, adhesives, treatments to prevent rot, etc., fewer quantities are likely to be suitable for biobased products. The costs of recovering, separating, and reducing the size of wood from mixed waste sources can be substantial.
