Refuse Derived Fuel
Printer Friendly

Refuse derived fuel (RDF) is produced from municipal solid waste (garbage) by removing materials that don’t burn (e.g., glass, metal) and wet materials (e.g., food scraps) in order to increase the fuel value of the waste and to create a consistent sized fuel. In 2005, an estimated 33.4 million tons of RDF was combusted to produce electricity in 89 waste-to energy facilities.
