Cuphea

The Cuphea genus contains about 250 wild species mostly native to Mexico, Central and South America. C. viscosisima is the only known variety native to the U.S., although four introduced species exist here in the wild. Cuphea seeds are about 25% oil and contain the same medium chain fatty acids used in large quantities by the soap and detergent industry, which currently obtains them from imported coconut oil and palm kernel oil.
