Ethanol
|
A colorless volatile flammable liquid, C2H5OH, widely used in industrial processes, as a solvent, as a fuel, and in alcoholic beverages. In the United States, ethanol is used as a gasoline octane enhancer in maximum 10 percent concentration, and in higher concentrations in vehicles designed for its use. In the U.S., terms for ethanol usually reflect the percentage of ethanol blended with petroleum-derived gasoline. For example, E10 is 10% ethanol blended with 90% gasoline, and E85 is 85% ethanol blended with 15% gasoline. Ethanol can be produced chemically from ethylene, or biologically from fermentation of agricultural crops and cellulosic residues from crops or wood.
