Methanol
|
Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, is a light, volatile, colorless, flammable, poisonous liquid with the chemical formula CH3OH and a distinctive odor that is somewhat milder and sweeter than ethanol. Although most methanol today is produced synthetically, methanol is a natural product of anaerobic metabolism in many varieties of bacteria and can be produced on a large scale from biomass. Methanol is used as an antifreeze, a solvent, as a fuel, and as a denaturant for ethanol.
