Palm Oil

The Oil Palm tree (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is native to West and Central Africa, where its food use dates back more than 5000 years. It is now cultivated throughout the tropics, particularly in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Africa. It is the highest yielding of all oilseed plants. The oil is mostly used in commercial food products, cosmetics and cooking oil, but recently palm oil has emerged as a promising feedstock for Southeast Asian biodiesel production. Palm oil is a major U.S. import. Little or no research has been reported on oil palm production in the United States.
