Sugar crops

The United States produces some 8.4 million tons of sugar each year. About 46% of the sugar is produced from sugarcane, and 54% is produced from sugarbeets. Sugarcane production is suited to tropical and subtropical regions and primarily takes place in Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and Hawaii. Sugarbeet production is more suited to temperate regions. About half of all sugarbeet production takes place in Minnesota and eastern South Dakota.
