Switchgrass

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L) is a warm season perennial bunch grass native to the tall grass prairies of North America. Its range now extends from Canada to Central America, where it is found in remnant prairies, along roadsides, pastures and as an ornamental plant in gardens. Long used as livestock forage, switchgrass is now being intensively studied as a dedicated energy crop because of its high potential fuel yields, drought tolerance, and ability to grow well on marginal land without heavy chemical use and intensive management. Potential uses of switchgrass are as a feedstock for cellulosic ethanol production, and as a supplement to coal for electricity generation.
