Pruning of trees and vines in orchards and vineyards could be a biomass resource. Orchards are concentrated along the Pacific Coast and Florida, but also exist in other states, most notably in the south and Northeast (figure 1). Very little data exists with respect to the quantities of material that might be available or their price. A California study indicates that in 2003, an estimated 1.77 million dry tons of orchard and vineyard prunings could have been available in the state. The study estimates that by 2017, 2.26 million dry tons of material could be available in California (California Energy Commission, 2004).
